Series Description

The Gnome Stories is a fantasy series devoted to discovering the border lines separating freedom and responsibility. Most of the stories intertwine human, gnome, and animal POVs. Sub-themes are jealousy, rejection, fear, spirituality, and leadership. All the crusty-tempered gnomes quest to find the secret of their missing parents, who are eventually turned to stone as they age.

Opening Trilogy
- Gnome Harvest: Wĭl, a gnome unhappy and inept in his profession of gardener, must befriend his nemesis Roddy the rabbit to escape his obligation and begin a new adventure. This year, he achieves his goal to kill the red demons, the large crows he despises because they eat the worms that provide magic under the garden's soil. Insect infestation sets in, and his rules and magic do not work. The Big Ones step in and poison and burn his beloved vegetable pets. In a subplot, Roddy is consumed with survivor's guilt and haunted by memories of his murdered kin.

Rōsettä Gnome: After traveling to a small village with Roddy, Wĭl meets other gnomes for the first time. Unfortunately, this dysfunctional group is involved in unsavory business, and warfare ensues. One gang kidnaps Wĭl 's new gal, Rōsettä. He marries her in the end, she dies in childbirth, and he ends up with the evil female gnome, Lŭciä. In a subplot, Vōlnēy (Rōsettä's brother) is trying to figure out a book he found in a bookstore. The book is Alice in Wonderland. He becomes convinced Roddy is the Mad Hatter, and Rōsettä is Alice. He can't read, and he forces Roddy out. The animal character in this book is Meer, a neurotic siamese cat belonging to Ôg, the other main character. Ôg leaves with Wĭl , Lŭciä, and the new baby in the end to form a new community. Ôg's storyline is about freedom and responsibility. Wĭl 's story involves finding a new family. Interpretation is a major theme.

Book Trailer:

Gnome Council: Wĭl is on the hunt for Zwërg after he murders Lŭciä. Og and Wĭl discover a child's potential is sometimes not met due to a serious inborn character flaw. In his quest to deliver justice, Wĭl joins the Gnome Council. Nature vs. Nurture theme.

Gnome-ing: Vōlnēy, an outcast from the gnome community due to his deep spiritual feelings, goes in search of a monastery to learn to read. His destiny is to go out into the world and do good deeds. His journey becomes thwarted when he ends up trapped in a city zoo, and finds a mentor in Albalegel, an old eagle with clipped wings. He thinks about the Zookeepers and his inadvertent capture, and comes to realize learning to read has nothing to do with his spiritual growth. He learns to do small acts of kindness and appreciate ordinary miracles. He must overcome his analytical nature and discover faith. Only magic can free him. Freedom and knowledge are major themes.
Gnome, Sweet Gnome: Rōsettä and Vōlnēy's early life in a hospital basement carries the themes of death and rebirth. Sabille, a squirrel helps them find out definitively what happens to old gnomes. Rōsettä learns to cope by not holding grief or anger, and Vōlnēy learns there is something out there he can't see or touch. Their parents, Ĕlyse and Gŭstăv feverishly work towards a cure for the stone disease. They are not able to produce a cure for gnomes, but inadvertantly help Hilary Koprowski create the polio vaccine.
Gnome Train: The story of Fõy, the gnome who rides the train. He is a deaf mute, and lives the life of a hobo. He has no animal companion, but plays jokes and tries to communicate with the Big Ones. He sees too much, and wonders about events that happen on the train.
Gnome Escape: Ôg's story of his early life as a slave in an industrial greenhouse. The tale of how he and Meer's mother, Meskhenet, come to plan and execute his escape from the overseer, Gheer. Prey/predator and freedom/responsibility themes.
Gnome King: It is the future. Wĭl is over a hundred years old. Stone disease has been eliminated, but curiously the kudzu also keeps the gnomes from aging. Wĭl must travel as part of his duties of the Gnome Council to NYC. A new Gnome King has become a dictator and wants to usurp the wisdom of the Gnome Council. He is surprised to learn the Gnome King is someone from his past.

Wĭl You can always count on Wĭl to be a hard worker and stand up for the little guy. Reliable, loyal and trustworthy, he is overwhelmed by guilt from his inabilities to do his occupation well. Friends with Roddy the rabbit, husband of Rōsettä, and father of Zwërg. Issues include lack of control over gnomes and the world, and finding a place to call home.	Ôg Spent his childhood as a slave in an industrial greenhouse. Limps from a dog injury. Hyperactive, and always on the go, he runs from some inner trouble he can't face. He has the mistaken belief that suffering can be avoided indefinitely. Addicted to sugar, he plans parties and outrageous thefts. Best friend is Meer, the cat. Issues are responsibility vs. freedom.	Hæglēy An unofficial leader, he just can't control his jealousy. Perfectionistic and opinionated, he is furiously angered when not recognized for the horribly misguided good he does in the world. He decides what is right or wrong and what to do about things, always with the worst possible negative slant. Ex-boyfriend of Lŭciä, kidnapper of Rōsettä, enemy of Bāin.
Vōlnēy The spiritual gnome with a quest to learn to read. He feels the spirit within but can't find evidence of it in his world. Eccentric and analytical, he carries an old Alice in Wonderland like a bible and is convinced Rōsettä is Alice. Intelligent and full of restraint, he's the odd man out. He practices his religion in a public zoo, and befriends Albalegel, an eagle with clipped wings. Brother to Rōsettä.	Lŭciä Dark-haired and manipulative, Lŭciä traffics in stolen goods. She smells of perfume and always wears bright colors. An excellent motivator, she is never finished improving. She has the incorrect belief that success, love and acceptance are earned through performance. To her, image is everything. Once attached to Hæglēy, she is obsessed with Wĭl and raises Zwërg.	Bāin A agoraphobic homebody with a temper, Bāin is a great cook that leads the gang of gnomes and settles disputes. He is inherently good and worries about everyone. He wants everyone to like him, and is very protective. Wants desperately to do good but is sometimes thwarted by his temper. He sees the world as dangerous and unstable and believes he is the only one who realizes this.
Rōsettä Poor Rōsettä. Like a flower, she blooms and then dies. She appears 'blank,' which the gnomes interpret depending on the circumstances. She can see many sides to any argument. Often considered stupid and innocent, she has a calming effect on any situation. Mother to Zwërg, sister to Vōlnēy and wife to Wĭl .	Zwërg Is he evil because he was raised by Lŭciä, or was he born from evil seed? This sociopathic gnome is good with his hands but not his words. He is curious about the world and how it works. Devil child of Rōsettä and Wĭl .	Fõy Mute, Fõy is intrigued with the Big Ones who run the trains and he tries to communicate with them. Strongly intelligent, he spends most of his life in his head. He has lost touch with reality in a profound way, and does not connect to the gnome community. He suffers paranoid delusions about events on the train.
